Today we woke in our bubble which was a bit of a surreal experience. We had breakfast at a bakery before the half hour or so drive back into Reykjavík where we said goodbye to our new friends and our tour guide.

Luckily we were able to check back into our hotel early so we took the opportunity to have a shower and freshen up before heading out and exploring this beautiful city. I’m loving the architecture and colours of the houses and shops, the backdrop of snow capped mountains and the pedestrian friendly streets.

Our first stop today was the FlyOver Iceland which was one of the most awesome experiences we have had. Our tour guide suggested it to us and it was not on our radar so we are very thankful for the recommendation. We did something similar in Copenhagen but this one is the best. You literally feel as though you are flying over the different landscapes and it was absolutely exhilarating. The FlyOver is a 20 metre spherical screen, coupled with special effects including wind, mists, scents and the motion of the seats and has you feeling totally immersed in the experience. I’d recommend it to anyone coming to Iceland, it was so good I’d happily do it again tomorrow apart from the fact we have an actual helicopter ride lined up which we are very much looking forward to.

We wandered through the Grandi Harbour district and then visited the Saga Museum. This museum depicts Iceland’s history and provided some interesting insights into some of the key people who settled and pioneered Iceland. It’s fair to say the life of the early Icelanders was very hard due to the climate, natural disasters and they also had to contend with the Black Death which wiped out a third of the population in 1402.

I was interested to find out that some Irish monks had actually lived on Iceland before the Norsemen who arrived in 870. The first Norseman to settle in the country was Ingolfur Arnarson, who arrived in Iceland in 874 with his wife Hallveig Froodadottir. He built his homestead at Reykjavík.

We then had lunch at the Seabaron Restaurant and enjoyed their famous Lobster Soup with Grilled fish on a spear. Amy’s favourite travel vloggers, Flying the Nest came here and recommended it. The soup and fish is essentially the only thing they cook here but we did spy some minke whale as well. Anyway, it was delicious and we can see why this restaurant is so popular.

Today we have explored the Grandi Harbour area, the Reykjavík pond and surrounding homes and buildings, Austurvoller Square and some of the side streets around the main shopping streets in the city centre. We really love this city and would happily return in the future.
